Yes, you certainly need proper reference in order to paint realistically. But while I don't normally have hyena cubs available, I had to settle for a cute labrador retriever puppy to start with to get the pose and expression I wanted. Then, for correct details and proportions, I checked out photos of real hyenas. And voilá, there I have it!
